ENJOYING THE RIDE!!!

I must admit that I never fully appreciated what I was getting myself into when I set off on this venture some 2 months ago. 3 weeks into my own practise, the firm is beginning to take shape. There have been numerous tasks which I didn't anticipate but have overcome these challenges in an unfamiliar stride. I've surprised myself almost everyday of the journey thus far. Although there are numerous outstanding issues which need my attention, I'm enjoying myself and the confidence level is growing. Must be the adrenalin flowing.
On 5th February, 2008 I argued my first case in my new found role. It was a fairly complex application seeking to discharge an interlocutory injunction and it was strongly opposed. After almost 2 hours of grueling oral submissions before High Court Judge, Rohana J., the Learned Judge reserved her decision to today. I needed a brave Judge to discharge an order made by her predecessor. Thankfully I found myself before one such judge. The result was more than satisfying. My maiden victory!!! Its moments like these which help keep the spirits up. The Gods must be smiling at me. Thank you, Waheguru.

A New Law Firm in Town

Messrs Balvinder Singh Kenth Advocates & Solicitors officially came into existance yesterday, 1st February, 2008. I took possession of my new office on 31st January, 2008. I decided to declare the first day of business a holiday to celebrate the firm's establishment. It happened to be City Day as well so the rest of town was also closed. The first day of my new adventure started with a morning meeting at Amcorp Tower in PJ, where it was not a holiday. How convenient. I spent the rest of the day at my old office clearing and packing personal stuff. A productive first day!!!

Finally, A Location for My Firm.

After more than a month of anxious and tiresome hunting for a suitable location, I have managed to find a suitable place at a reasonable rental for my yet unborn firm. My address will be at...(drum roll)... Plaza Damas at Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur. The great thing about this place is that its literally 5 minutes away from the new Jalan Duta Court Complex. So commuting between Court and the office would certainly be a breeze. I've also very little to do in terms of renovations. I have agreed to take over most of the furniture and fittings from the previous tenant at an affordable price. For now, I will only need to put up some blinds and shelves for law books. I'm glad this part is over. I can now concentrate on placing orders for other office equipment plus getting the phone, fax and internet connections.

Name of Firm Approved

I got back to the office today after our customary office closure from Christmas to New Year's Day. Sitting on my desk was a letter dated 26.12.07, from the Bar Council addressed to me. As expected, my firm's name received the council's approval. I have less than a month to get my firm up and about. Location is still a huge question mark that confronts me. Wil have to settle this issue soon.

Approval of name of Firm

On Wednesday, 19 Dec, 2007, I submitted a request to the Executive Director of the Bar Council to obtain approval for the name of my firm. I don't anticipate the BC having any issues with the name and expect to obain a letter of approval soon. Meanwhile the task of looking for a location will gain momentum next week, as I am tied up with the Annual Samelan (youth camp) in Klang which my family and I are attending this entire week.

The search for a Location begins

I am now embarking on an expedition of sorts to decide on where to locate my new firm. I am mindful of the importance of choosing the right location in terms of access to and for clients, staff and the courts. Suitable and sufficient parking for staff and clients is also a concern. Of course, there are budget constraints which limit my choice. I'm on a "shoe-string" law firm budget at the moment and it is always wise to keep the overheads low when starting a new venture.
